HIT West End comedy Dirty Rotten Scoundrels will make its Wearside debut - the Sunderland Empire has announced.

A national tour of the musical, based on the hit 1988 film starring Michael Caine and Steve Martin, will run for a fortnight at the High Street West venue next summer.

The show’s been winning rave reviews for its West End run at Savoy Theatre which stars Robert Lindsay and Katherine Kingsley, though the casting has not yet been announced for its Sunderland shows.

Tony Award-winning director and choreographer Jerry Mitchell said: “I am thrilled that Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, our very first show from Jerry Mitchell Productions, will be taking to the road in the UK. I have no doubt that every city we visit will take this hilarious show to their hearts and will laugh and enjoy this musical as much as a quarter of a million people who have already seen it so far have done.”

Audiences will be transported to the French Riviera where the decadent world of sophisticated conman Lawrence Jameson is set to come crashing down with the arrival of larger-than-life Freddy Benson – a conman of an entirely different order.

Soon realising the town ain’t big enough for the both of them, the two find themselves going head to head in the con of their lives, pulling out all of the stops in a bid for the affections of millionaire soap heiress Christine Colgate.

•Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is at Sunderland Empire from June 9-20. Tickets, priced £20.40 - £50.40, are on sale now from the Box Office on High Street West, Sunderland or from the Ticket Centre on 0844 871 3022 and online at www.ATGtickets.com/Sunderland.
