A PUB chain has been given the go ahead to revamp a high street store.
Wetherspoons has been granted permission to open a bar in the M&Co shop, in Church Street, Seaham.
The chain, which already runs pubs in Sunderland, Houghton, Washington, Chester-le-Street and Durham City, has been given the green light by Durham County Council planning officers.
The decision was delegated to officers, instead of a committee of councillors.
Wetherspoons still has to apply for a licence and does not have an opening date.
It has said should the proposal proceed, the development would cost about £1.1million and create up to 45 jobs.
Over recent years, the national company has said that since the regeneration of the former pit town began, it has been keen to move into Seaham.
Spokesman Eddie Gershon said: “We believe that a Wetherspoon pub in Seaham will be an asset to the area, and one that will be welcomed by people.”
The application had previously been backed by East Durham Business Service, which said it welcomes investment in the town.
