WEARSIDE bosses have come to the rescue of Joe McElderry after his Newcastle gig was cancelled.
The 22-year-old is set to perform at the Rainton Meadows Arena in Houghton on Tuesday. The gig replaces one at Newcastle’s O2 Academy, which was postponed due to contract issues with the promoters.
South Shields singer Joe said: “I was looking forward to the gig at the O2, but unfortunately we’ve had to postpone it for now.
“Myself and my management want to say a huge thank-you to the staff at Rainton Meadows Arena for squeezing me in at the last minute.
“It’s such a beautiful venue, and I can’t wait to perform there again. I took part in a competition there, before I went on the X Factor, called Music Means Life.
“It was in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust and, now that I’m a North East patron of the charity, returning to the venue feels nice. I can’t wait to get up on stage and perform.”
Joe was crowned winner of the X Factor in 2009 and went on to win another reality show – Popstar to Operastar – in 2011. He has released four studio albums and sold more than two million copies worldwide.
The cabaret-style gig will see audience members seated around tables for an intimate performance.
Food will also be on offer for concert-goers, with doors opening at 5pm and the performance starting at 7pm.
A nearby hotel, The Chilton Country Pub and Hotel in Black Boy Road, Fence Houses, is offering a special deal for Joe fans.
Anyone heading to the gig on Tuesday, can stay in the hotel overnight at a reduced rate.
