FORMER Inspiral Carpets frontman Tom Hingley performed a free set in Sunderland after being inspired by a home-grown cultural hub.
He performed an intimate acoustic set and signed copies of his memoir Carpet Burns, My life with Inspiral Carpets, which charts his time with the band from 1989–2011, in Pop Recs.
In the past few weeks alone, acts including The Vaccines, The Cribs and The Charlatans have rocked the venue which was established by Sunderland five-piece Frankie & the Heartstrings to bring more live music to their hometown.
Heartstrings drummer Dave Harper said: “Tom is aware of what we do and he approached us at 6Music Festival about performing. He’s one of the people who actually contacted us and not the other way round, even though it’s derby day, of all days. He’s of the one percent of people who say they will help and actually do. Not everyone is cut from the same cloth.”
