ONE of the year’s key newcomers, Liverpudlian Holly Lapsley Fletcher is among those nominated for the BBC’s annual Sound of... poll, and has already bagged the Blog Sound award for the most-covered artist of 2014.
Issued by independent heavyweights XL, this debut EP finds the 18-year-old songstress pitching her flag early.
Mixing a classical education with her love of contemporary electronica, its four compositions have a distinct late night feel, steered by stark piano, minimal beats and ethereal voice manipulation.
It’s a singular sonic base, and one she’s yet to truly nail down - but the effect is already striking on the likes of Falling Short and Dancing, not to mention the warm synth pulses of standout Brownlow.
Considering how far she’s already come, it’s difficult not to fantasise over where such ambition will lead a few releases down the line. 8/10. AW
