A CINEMA is raising the curtain on an epic opera.

Les Troyens will be broadcast live from The Royal Opera House to Empire Cinema in Sunniside on Sunday at 8pm.

Following the success of Swan Lake, which kicked off the Royal Opera House’s Live Cinema Season last month, Les Troyens is set to wow cinema-goers.

Dubbed as one of the greatest Royal Opera events of the decade, Les Troyens is taken from Virgil’s poem The Aeneid and dramatises the fall of Troy and Enée’s (Aeneas’) doomed affair with Didon (Dido), Queen of Carthage.

Les Troyens, part of the Royal Opera House Live Cinemas Season, is the latest instalment in a long line of events and live screenings as Empire Cinemas expands its offering beyond movie releases.

Jon Nutton, marketing director of Empire Cinemas, said: “The first screening from the Royal Opera House’s Live Cinema Season was a sell-out – Les Troyens is a fantastic opera that will no doubt receive the same rapturous welcome.

“The appetite for alternative screenings just keeps on growing and we’re proud to be able to offer more variety to our audiences. Here at Empire Cinemas we’re always looking for new ways to entertain wide and varied audiences across the UK - Les Troyens is definitely one not to be missed.”
