SOUTH Tyneside singing star Joe McElderry is getting ready to lead the cast in a rock musical.
The X Factor and Popstar To Operastar champ will follow in the footsteps of Who frontman Roger Daltrey to play Tommy in the eponymous rock opera.
Joe, 23, of Westoe, South Shields, posted a video on his website yesterday announcing his role in the musical.
He’ll kick off the UK tour of the show, written by Who guitarist Pete Townshend and Des McAnuff, about a deaf, dumb and blind kid who sure plays a mean pinball, at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool in September.
Joe said: “I’m very excited to announce that I’ll be joining the cast of a brand new production of Tommy, the rock musical, which is premiereing at Blackpool’s Winter Gardens this September.
“I’ll be playing the role of Tommy, and to celebrate the announcement, all of you guys can get £10 off tickets for a limited time and also be in with a chance of winning one in 10 special goody bags and also the possibility of meeting me on the opening night in sunny Blackpool.”
Joe has played the role once before in a one-off show in London’s West End, at the Prince Edward Theatre in 2012.
The original album the show, first staged in 1992, was based on was released in 1969.
It was also turned into a film, directed by Ken Russell, in 1975.
The new show is directed by Paul Nicholas, one of the stars of the film version.
It features classic Who songs such as Pinball Wizard, I’m Free and See Me, Feel Me.
