INDIE hero Tom Hingley will perform a free set in Sunderland, the Echo can announce.
The former frontman of the Inspiral Carpets will perform an acoustic set and book reading at Pop Recs Ltd, in Fawcett Street, next month.
Impressed by the store’s ethos of bringing live music and culture to the heart of Sunderland, he agreed to perform a free set.
In the past month alone, Pop Recs has welcomed a host of musicians through its doors with sets from The Charlatans, Dutch Uncles and Hyde & Beast.
Michael McKnight, from Pop Recs, said: “We got talking to Tom at the 6 Music Festival. We told him all about what we’re doing at Pop Recs and he said he’d love to help us out.
“I’m a big fan of Inspiral Carpets and it’s great that someone like him is prepared to give up his time to do something like this for us. It’s a great chance to see a musician like this live.”

A flagship band of the Madchester scene, famed for their psychedelic sounds, Inspiral Carpets rose to prominence with hits including This Is How It Feels and Saturn 5. Since leaving the band, Tom performs both solo and as a band.
His memoir, Carpet Burns, charts his time with Inspiral Carpets from 1989 to 2011.
Since Pop Recs was opened by Frankie & the Heartstrings in June 2013, it’s brought a host of music to the band’s hometown including Franz Ferdinand, Edwyn Collins and Badly Drawn Boy.
More big name acts are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
As well as being a gig space, Pop Recs is a record store, independent coffee shop and platform for local artists to display their work.
