A GERMAN orchestra is bringing its sound to Sunderland.
The Mülheim Mandolin Orchestra – Mülheimer Zupforchester (MZO) – will play North Shore in St Peter’s on Wednesday from 7.15pm.
I think this is something a little different for everyone to come and enjoy.Mayor Stuart Porthouse
The Sunderland concert is alongside two performances in Darlington as this is the twin-town for Mülheim, which is close to Essen, Sunderland’s twin town, in North West Germany.
City Mayor Councillor Stuart Porthouse is hosting the orchestra, many of whose members are from Essen, before their Sunderland concert.
He said: “I understand they’re very highly regarded and they have excelled in many international and national competitions.
“I think this is something a little different for everyone to come and enjoy.
“I’ve certainly never seen a mandolin orchestra, so I’m very much looking forward to it. I’m sure the group is going to be well received with plenty of North East hospitality.”
The MZO has toured Italy, France, Poland and Israel previously and their repertoire runs from the renaissance to the modern era, with re-worked versions of pop songs and film scores.
The tour is supported by the German Foreign Office and the Goethe Institut. For more information, see www.english.mzoweb.de. Tickets for Wednesday’s concert are £5 and available at: www.ticketsource.co.uk/event/84469, Box Office Tel: 0191 219 3455.
