A FAMILY devastated by a brain injury have been awarded free tickets to one of Wearside’s biggest gigs.

John and Claire Lindsay, of Elstob Farm, are among five deserving families in the region to be given free tickets to tomorrow’s North East Live by event organisers SAFC and AEG Live.

The couple – who will be taking children Jennifer Lindsay, six, and Jon Weirs, 14, – had their world turned upside down when John was struck down by a rare brain virus in 2006.

John, 42, collapsed at the family home after developing limbic encephalitis, a form of swelling on the brain.

He spent four months in hospital and has been left with a permanent brain injury, along with memory impairments and epilepsy, which have left him unable to work.

Wife Claire, 35, who is now his full-time carer, entered the competition so the family could spend some quality time together.

“John has been left with scarring on the brain which has affected so many different aspects of our lives,” she said.

“I saw the competition and, as we all love music, I thought it would be a great opportunity to spend some time together.”

The family will be joining the tens of thousands of pop fans who’ll be at tomorrow’s gig to see Jessie J, Jason Derulo, Rizzle Kicks, The Saturdays, The Vamps, Union J, Katy B, Neon Jungle, Rixton and Austin Mahone. Doors will open at noon, with the first act, Austin Mahone, on stage at 1.20pm. The show is due to close at 10pm.

A number of tickets, priced from £25, are still available at or
