Have your say

A popular city centre tearoom has shut up shop.

Last night The Elephant Tearooms, in High Street West, posted a statement on its Facebook page saying it would cease trading.

It read: “Due to very unfortunate and unforeseen circumstances we have had to close the Tea Rooms and are so sorry to say that, as it stands, it is unclear as to when we will be able to trade again.

“Thank you in advance for your understanding and a massive thank you for all your support and custom.”

Customers with pre-paid bookings, deposits and afternoon tea vouchers were asked to message the Facebook page or contact for a refund.

The tearooms, which opened in 2015, was named after the original Elephant Tearooms in Sunderland which dates back to 1875. Though it was housed a short walk from the original tearooms, it had the same ethos of serving traditional loose leaf teas.

As well as teas, it served breakfast and lunches, including Sunday roasts.
