Ordering anything other than a burger in a place with a name like Saucy Burger is probably akin to eschewing chicken in Nando’s.
But you’ve got to be in the mood for meat.
Saucy Burger opened earlier this year to capitalise upon the rise in the gourmet burger trend. Far from being the preserve of fast food joints and food vans, burgers are big business and the ones here come in all manner of forms, with varieties topped with everything from Monster Munch to fried banana.
The burger joint replaced The Apartment Group’s previous venture Dr Feelgood, above sister site Liberty Brown, and for those who don’t want to get their hands messy with the supersize burgers, there’s still some tapas favourites.
I chose from this and ordered the tapas for £12.95 – the crayfish salad, salt and pepper squid and harissa spiced halloumi skewer.
My previous visits to Dr Feelgood tapas restaurant had been a mixed bag, though the venue always looked stylish, its food was sometimes lacking in substance. The tapas, ironically, seems to have improved when it’s not the main feature on the menu.
The crayfish was a kraken of a seafood salad and was presented as a satisfying heap of crustaceans tossed in a light chipotle sauce with spring onion, radish and cucumber.
The fried squid could have done with being a little crisper, but was equally good value for money while the halloumi skewers took my tastebuds on a trip to the Middle East thanks to the addition of a bed of chickpea salad and a punchy jalapeño mayonnaise.
Despite burgers being the main draw here, Saucy Burger has certainly got more of a feelgood factor than its previous guise.
