Fancy taking tea like an Edwardian?
Beamish Museum is giving visitors the chance to tuck into the English tradition as their ancestors would have with an Edwardian afternoon tea.
Starting from Mother’s Day, March 26, visitors to the museum’s The 1900s Town can dine like turn of the century ladies.
Afternoon Tea at Beamish will include freshly-made sandwiches, homemade scones with clotted cream and seasonal jam, a selection of individual sweet treats from the museum’s Herron’s Bakery and, of course, tea or coffee.
It is served in a room adjacent to the museum’s Tea Rooms in The 1900s Town, furnished in the style of an early ice cream parlour with wooden booths and mirrored fixtures.
The menu will change with the seasons and gluten and dairy free options are available. Children’s portions of afternoon tea can also be served.
Denise Hodge, Beamish’s Head of Food, said: “We’re delighted to be able to offer afternoon tea at Beamish. It’s fantastic that we can give visitors the chance to indulge in a delicious experience in the beautiful setting of our Edwardian Town.
Afternoon tea at Beamish has been developed by Sarah Gallagher, a Catering Assistant at the museum.
Sarah is part of the People Development Programme, funded through Arts Council England’s Major Partner Museums. The programme gives staff the chance to implement their ideas to improve visitors’ experiences, as well as boosting their own skills.
Sarah spent many months researching, costing, developing and testing the Afternoon Tea offer and is excited that all of her hard work has come to fruition.
She said: “I can’t believe it’s come together and the hard work has paid off. All of the staff in the Tea Rooms are looking forward to the start of something new when we serve the first afternoon teas on Mother’s Day.”
