Immerse yourself in Giuseppe Verdi’s Nabucco.

Empire Cinema in Sunniside will be screening the classic opera live from the Royal Opera House in London at 7.15pm on Monday.

Nabucco is an epic tale based on the Biblical story of King Nebuchadnezzar and was composed by the legendary, Italian 19th Century composer, Giuseppe Verdi.

This production stars one of the most celebrated talents of our time in the lead role, Placido Domingo, who is also making his debut in a major role as Nabucco.

Domingo is joined by a young cast including Ukranian soprano Liudmyla Monastyrska as the power-hungry priestess Abigaille.

The opera focuses on King Nebuchadnezzar’s imprisonment of the Hebrews and his struggle against his ruthless daughter, Abigaille, culminating in his divine punishment and final salvation.

Audiences can expect to be swept up by Verdi’s rich melodies and raw drama as the opera explores themes of nationhood, identity, love and redemption.

The production is the latest instalment in a long line of recent events and live screenings from Empire Cinemas as it continues to expand its alternative content offerings.

Previous Royal Opera House screenings have included Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Eugene Onegin, La bohème, The Nutcracker and Les Troyens.

Jon Nutton, marketing director of Empire Cinemas, said: “It’s a pleasure to offer audiences the chance to see one of the Royal Opera House’s acclaimed productions, Nabucco.

“To be able to capture the excitement of the performance and bring it to our cinemagoers is great.

“Here at Empire Cinemas, we pride ourselves on offering a wide range of alternative content as we continue our relationship with the Royal Opera House.”
