Teenager Emma Newport is dancing with delight after a successful audition.

Emma, 14, from Birtley, was one of nearly 100 hopefuls who auditioned for the opportunity to perform on stage with the Regional Youth Ballet Company.

She will dance at the Playhouse Theatre, in Whitley Bay, in three performances of Les Sylphides on Friday and Saturday, November 13 and 14.

Her audition consisted of a classical ballet class, including pointe work which required Emma to show both classical technique and performance skills.

Emma, a pupil at the Lord Lawson of Beamish Academy, studies ballet at the Kathleen Davis Stage School in Sunderland, alongside many other dance disciplines.

She recently achieved classical ballet certificates with both the Royal Academy of Dance and The British Theatre Dance Association, earning a distinction.

She said she was thrilled to be able to put her training from the dance studio into a full-blown professional performance, working alongside professional dancers.

A school spokesman said: “This is a wonderful achievement for Emma and a fantastic opportunity for any young dancer. We are all very proud of her.”
