A Sunderland photographer has created an alternative view of his home city. Katy Wheeler finds out more.

From Roker Pier captured in an eerie light, to Mowbray Park’s Victoria Hall Memorial photographed in the middle of the night, photographer Andy Martin seeks to find an alternative way of portraying Wearside.

His This is Sunderland images can be seen as part of a joint exhibition in Pop Recs Ltd, in Fawcett Street, where visitors can also view his Tin Types display, which features portraits done with Victorian photography techniques.

His work has struck a chord, so much so, he’s released a calendar of his This is Sunderland images.

Andy, from Grangetown, said: “I’ve been doing calendars for the past few years for friends and family and everyone always says I should try and sell them.

“I thought I’d release this one as a trial, but it’s been selling really well. I wanted to try and create an alternative view of Sunderland, not the typical ones people are used to seeing.”

Andy’s This is Sunderland calendars, priced £6, are available to buy from Pop Recs Ltd or online at
