The British puppet bear was voted as the nation’s favourite puppet in a new poll

Popular puppet bear Sooty has been voted as Sunderland’s favourite puppet in a new poll.

The 67-year-old British puppet was created by Harry Corbett and beat his best friend, Sweep, to number one.

Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy and Andy Pandy were some of the city’s other favourites, making it into the top 10.

The research was carried out by Travelodge following the launch of their own puppet characters, the Travelodgicals.

Out of the top 20 puppets in Sunderland, 13 of them began their lives in the 1950s and 60s.

Gorden the Gopher, who is 30, was the youngest puppet to make the list at number four.

Two thousand adults were questioned as part of the survey.
