Following the sell out launch night of the Mackem Dictionary Second Edition at The Royalty Theatre in August, Sunderland University Students Union bought 3000 copies of the title to give to each and every new student starting a course at the university this year.

Harry Chirnside, vice president community and events at Sunderland Students’ Union, said: “Our Freshers Week this year is all about welcoming new students to Sunderland and introducing them to the sights and sounds of the city.

“An integral part of Sunderland is the Mackem dialect so we are delighted to be giving away the Mackem dictionary to help introduce new students to some of the words and phrases they’ll need to get used to hearing around the city.

“We’ve also produced a city map to help them find their way around and we’ve even included a few popular Mackem phrases in our events guide. We think all Sunderland students are Mackems for life, whether they come from here or from the other side of the world, we are keen to make all students feel welcome here and to get them involved in everything Sunderland has to offer.”

Author Paul Swinney, who teamed up with publishers ALS, to produce the book, said: “It’s fantastic that the Sunderland University Students Union have decided to give out the Bible of the Mackem dialect to all of its new students.

“I hope that it helps ease their transition in to life on Wearside, I’m sure if they put the hours in studying they’ll be asking for batter with their fish lot in no time. I’d like to extend a very big welcome to them all, and I hope they have a hugely enjoyable time in the city as they undertake their studies.”

The Mackem Dictionary has become the best-selling book at Waterstones Sunderland.

The Hilton Garden Inn Sunderland recently purchased copies for all of its rooms and the captains of The Tall Ships at the recent regatta were all given copies thanks to Sunderland Council
