The 22-year-old has joined Scott Parker’s men on loan from Bordeaux until the end of the season, and struck twice on his first outing for the club as they wrapped up all three points against Everton on Sunday evening.

Maja left the Stadium of Light in January 2019 after failing to agree terms on an improved contract with the Black Cats.

The saga was chronicled in Netflix’s hit documentary Sunderland ‘Til I Die, but the hitman is now attracting attention for his efforts on the pitch following his superb start to life at Craven Cottage.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, Carragher lauded his performance against the Toffees, as well as referencing his past on Wearside.

He said: “How important this man in the middle could be – Josh Maja.

"He’s actually on loan from Bordeaux. We know him from the Netflix series Sunderland ‘Til I Die.”

Jones, who also works as a non-executive director for Sunderland, responded: "Oh yeah, thanks for reminding me!"Carragher then added: “His movement was fantastic [against Everton].

"I thought it summed up Scott Parker and Fulham, doing different things, playing real football.

"You do think of players who’ve come in at clubs – certainly strikers who’ve got goals and kept them up.

"Look at his hold-up play, the strength there.

"He’s coming short, he’s jogging on the spot. He’s the first in there [for a rebound]”
