Sunderland man who was spared jail is locked up after committing copycat offence

A man who was spared prison for causing criminal damage to a woman’s home has been locked up after admitting a copycat offence.

Duane Burney was initially handed an eight-week suspended jail term after he was convicted of causing £200 of damage to French doors on December 4, 2019, at an address in Sunderland.

Burney, 35, of Wordsworth Avenue West, Houghton, who was also barred by a restraining order from visiting the woman’s home, has now admitted causing another £300 of damage to patio doors belonging to her on March 6.

He also pleaded guilty to breaching the 2020 restraining order on March 6 and to committing further offences while serving a suspended sentence.

South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court has now jailed him for four weeks for the 2021 charges and added another six weeks by triggering part of last year’s suspended jail term.

The court, which described his latest offences as a “blatant breach” of previous sentences, has also ordered him to pay £260 compensation.
