The 23-year-old has agreed a deal to purchase a majority stake in the club from Stewart Donald, with the deal confirmed on Christmas Eve.

Paperwork was forwarded to the EFL from that point and Louis-Dreyfus – who is thought to be worth around £2billion and will be appointed chairman if the deal is sanctioned – is now awaiting the green light from the league before the ownership change can be sanctioned.

Talks remain ongoing over a deal and the billionaire’s appearance at the game is not thought to be an indication that an announcement is imminent.

Louis-Dreyfus was pictured alongside sporting director Kristajaan Speakman as the Black Cats faced the Shews – and it’s understood this isn’t the first fixture he has attended this season.

But his attendance in Shropshire led to a host of Sunderland fans taking to social media to suggest that the deal was nearly done – while some were evening dreaming of further glory under his ownership.

Here’s what was said:

@gabenoble12 said: “There’s the boy man, takeover surely done now?? No way he’d be at Shrewsbury on a Tuesday night if it wasn’t surely”

@e_sunderland joked: “Scenes when KLD drops TRILLIONS on next season’s squad and were the first team in history to qualify for the champions league directly from League 1. MBappe on one wing, Neymar on the other, Wyke up top. Scenes. Absolute scenes.”

@1InThere4U said: “KLD coming to watch the wizards after the salary cap lift announced, coincidence, I think not”

@mattsafc9 added: “KLD at the game looks very promising”
