SUNDERLAND Under-10s lifted the Durham County Shield when a showcase of attacking rugby sealed a 25-10 victory over West Hartlepool at Redcar.
The Ashbrooke youngsters were squeezed out of a tough County Cup group, topped by eventual cup winners Durham City Gold, to whom they lost 15-5.
In the Shield, the Sunderland youngsters took an early lead against Guisborough with Bryson Robinson smashing his way through for a brace of tries.
Robinson surged across the Guisborough gain line, feeding Adam Williams to touch down, sealing a 15-0 victory.
In the semi-final against Gateshead, Sunderland were 10-0 down as the Tynesiders worked the ball out to their pacy wingers to score.
The early deficit stunned Sunderland into action and Robinson grabbed two tries to level. Soon after, Sam Watson found himself in acres of space to add a third.
Josh Jobling crossed for a fourth, before Watson darted over to seal a 25-10 victory.
In the final, Sunderland went straight for the jugular, with Robinson West’s tormentor in chief, grabbing two tries.
In defence, Lewis Irwin and Ethan Ellis cut the West supply off at source, while Jobling and Watson both grabbed tries.
Despite two consolation tries from West, Sunderland never looked like losing and Robinson added a fifth to take the silverware back to Ashbrooke.
Durham City Gold triumphed in the County Cup final, beating Hartlepool 25-5.
H Tomorrow, Newbottle Primary and St Paul’s CE, from Ryhope, will represent Sunderland in the Durham County Year5/6 Tag Rugby Finals at Maiden Castle.
Newbottle B pipped St Paul’s 20-15 in a close-fought final at Ashbrooke, following a defeat of Newbottle A in their semi-final, after topping their group.
St Paul’s earlier claimed a convincing 35-5 victory over Richard Avenue in their semi.
