Lee sparks Washington

WASHINGTON will look to make it two wins out of two when they host Newton Aycliffe at Biddick in Durham and Northumberland Division Three on Saturday.

The Newtowners are in good spirits after a 39-0 rout of hosts Jarrovians in their opening match of the new season.

Washington impressed from start to finish and will look to maintain that form against Saturday’s visitors, who won their opener 30-0 against South Tyneside College.

Callum Lee capped a tremendous individual performance with three tries. He surged through several challenges to grab the first try of the match, outpaced everyone when running from his own half for a second score then raced in from 30 yards to complete a memorable hat-trick.

Matty Fisher touched down after hooker Phil White was finally stopped by three defenders, just inches from the try line, with veteran George Spencer also scoring after a quick tap penalty left Jarrovians helpless.

Mike Lawrence added two penalties and four conversions to give Washington the perfect start to the campaign.

H Houghton, also in Division Three, visit Yarm on Saturday, looking to build on last week’s narrow 17-16 success against Winlaton Vulcans.
