Durham City go down fighting

DURHAM City produced a determined display, but could not prevent a 24-17 defeat at North One East title chasers Percy Park.

The Tynesiders were 17-0 up before City got on the scoresheet, full-back Rob Smith breaking two tackles to score a try under the post, with Arnie Stevenson converting.

Percy Park, closing the gap on leaders West Hartlepool, extended their advantage with a fourth try before Durham responded with two more tries of their own, Smith pouncing after great work from Howard Johnson, then wing Luke Burgess adding another unconverted score in stoppage time.

H Sunderland suffered a 53-8 hammering at Stockton.
