The former Dunston UTS and North Shields frontman has plundered his way to 18 goals in all competitions this season – despite Red Star spending the vast majority of the campaign in the bottom three of the Division One table.

His impressive start to the season has only added to his impressive goalscoring form since he joined Red Star in September 2018 and since making his debut in a league game at Bishop Auckland, Wilson had found the net on 31 occasions in 63 games in all competitions.

His form last season led to significant interest from clubs around the Northern League, but Red Star tied down the 25-year-old on a contract earlier this year.

That hasn’t stopped clubs showing an interest in acquiring the striker’s services and Collingwood confirmed that a cash offer from one of the league’s top six clubs had been rejected earlier this season.

Collingwood told The Echo: “I think Dan Wilson is the best striker in the league if I am honest.

“His goals in a side that is struggling back up that opinion, and he did the same last season, during what was a transitional season for us as a club.

“He’s fighting fit, he’s got things right and I honestly think we would be in a bit of bother if we didn’t have him in our side.

“He is as good as anything around and he is dominating teams that don’t normally get dominated – he showed that at Stockton Town a few weeks back.

“He’s not just a targetman as some people say, you don’t rely on getting people around him, he’s so much more than that.

“But it’s not just his play, or his attitude, it’s his lack of arrogance.”

Wilson will be hoping to add to his tally of goals when Red Star visit Whickham in a Durham Challenge Cup Second Round tie on Wednesday night.
