Heed manager Mike Williamson has now managed to tie down nine members of the squad that helped the club into contention for a National League North play-off place last season.

Deverdics followed in the footsteps of Greg Olley, JJ O’Donnell and Jordan Preston when the club announced that he had agreed a new one-year deal on Friday morning.

The former Hartlepool United midfielder joined Gateshead for the second time in his career in the first month of last season after spending a short spell at the International Stadium following his release from Newcastle United in 2006.

After leaving Gateshead he went on to have spells with the likes of Barnet, Blyth Spartans and Faroese club Tvøroyrar Bóltfelag – but returned to the North East when he agreed to join Hartlepool United on a free transfer in June 2016.

Deverdics left Victoria Park to join Wrexham in January 2018 but agreed to start a second stint with Gateshead last season when his 18-month deal with the Welsh outfit came to an end.

The 32-year-old quickly became a key figure in Williamson’s plans and scored three goals in 31 appearances before the coronavirus epidemic brought a premature end to the 2019/20 season.

He will now hope to help Gateshead build on the momentum they gained during a solid first season back in the National League North.
