But what has happened to the players who found themselves on the way out of the club last season?
We take a look at where the 13 players who left the Black Cats are plying their trade now, and it’s safe to say they’ve enjoyed varying fortunes:
1. Lee Cattermole
The midfielder joined Dutch side VVV Venlo after agreeing to prematurely end his contract at the Stadium of Light last summer. After spending the season in the Eredivise, VVV recently announced he would not be offered a new contract - leaving the midfielder a free agent. Photo: Mark Runnacles
2. Reece James
James was something of a surprise departure last summer as, shortly after triggering a one-year extension in his contract, he joined Doncaster Rovers. He remains with the South Yorkshire side having made 32 appearances this term. Photo: Naomi Baker
3. Max Johnstone
The former Manchester United stopper left the Black Cats after just one season at the Academy of Light and went on to join St Johnstone. It was recently announced that his contract with the Scottish side would not be renewed. Photo: JPI Media
4. Lamine Kone
Kone was one of a number of big-earners who left the Stadium of Light last summer, and joined Ligue 1 side Strasbourg. He made 25 appearances for his new club before the 2019/20 season was curtailed. Photo: PATRICK HERTZOG
