SACRISTON Chargers outgunned their club rival Desperadoes 8-2 in Division Three of the Sunderland and District League

Chargers’ John Reid looked to be cruising in the first two ends against Oliver King before his opponent rallied to take the third. However, Reid finally edging the fourth game 11-9 to secure the opening set.

Chargers’ Peter Whitfield was then pushed all the way in a tough 3-1 victory against Oliver Turnbull, who switched to a more defensive style.

Paul Henderson added a third win for Chargers, despite beating beaten 17-15 in an epic second game against youngster Robert Atkinson.

Desperadoes’ youngsters were certainly not overawed, typified when King played impressively against Whitfield before losing 3-1.

The doubles set went to Reid and Whitfield, who edged home 3-1 against Turnbull and Atkinson to go 5-0 ahead.

Chargers took the next two sets before Desperadoes picked up their consolation sets when Turnbull and King both beat Henderson 3-0.

Chargers, though, secured the maximum four points for their victory when Reid’s concentration told in a tremendous five-end battle against Turnbull.

At the other end of the table, St John A remain unbeaten and firm favourites for promotion after picking up three wins against East Boldon, Sacriston Desperadoes and St John C.

Duffin’s topspin forehands had his opponent on the retreat to win the first game relatively easily.

Foster’s more measured approach ensured a tighter second game, but Duffin won 21-18 and then took the third 21-8 to set up a mouth-watering tie against the experienced Joe Muldowney, who will be required to give his opponent a 14-point handicap.
