Wylie targets Ponds Forge after five wins

CITY of Sunderland swimmer Matthew Wylie has struck gold again with five national titles – and five personal best swims – in the S9 category at the DSE National Junior and Youth Short Course Championships.

More than 200 disabled swimmers from Great Britain and the Republic of Ireland took part in the Championships at Ponds Forge Sheffield.

Matthew topped the podium in the 100m freestyle with a time of 1.02.12, 400m freestyle (4.35.75), 100m individual medley (1.16.56), 100m backstroke (1.13.81) and 50m freestyle (29.19).

He was also a member of the ASA North East Region team which won the overall team trophy for the first time.

Matthew said: “I’m happy with my performances at this gala, It’s important to PB from one gala to the next and show progress.  

“My focus is the second paralympic trials held at Ponds Forge this weekend, where I hope to go faster again in the 400 freestyle.”

H City of Sunderland excelled in the team events at the Northumberland and Durham British Age Group Championships, held at the Sunderland Aquatic Centre, scooping four golds, two silvers and a bronze medal.

The Sunderland Boys A team and the Sunderland Girls A team both recorded podium-topping performances in the 400m and 800m freestyle events and both teams also went on to take second spot in the 400m medley events.

The Sunderland Girls B team also chipped in with a 800m freestyle bronze medal.

In the individual events, 12-year-old Thomas Burns won the 400m freestyle gold and two silver medals in the 200m and 400m individual medley events, while 13-year-olds Freya Rayner and Gabrielle Burdess won respective 100m gold medals in the backstroke and the freestyle events.

Eleven-year-old Beth Nicholson took the 100m freestyle silver medal and bronze medals in the 400m freestyle and 400m individual medley, while 12-year-old Jodi Bunker won the 100m breaststroke silver medal together with 400m bronze medals in the freestyle and individual medley events.

Sunderland’s success in the individual medley continued with a double silver for 13-year-old Jessica Thompson at 200m and 400m distance, while 11-year-old Callum Dann won the 200m bronze medal with 12-year-old Joseph Pomfret taking the 400m bronze medal.

Further success was enjoyed in the 13-year-old age group with Callum Reveley winning double bronze in the 100m freestyle and butterfly while Laura Taylor won the 100m butterfly bronze medal.
