Women’s hockey: Laura’s quick spark inspires Durham Uni

DURHAM University firsts have a blank week this Saturday – but can reflect on an outstanding start to the season.

Sophie Clough’s side sit two points clear in the Investec England Women’s League’s Conference North, after beating Kendal 4-2 for their sixth win in seven matches.

Laura Bevan led the way, netting a seventh-minute opener from a penalty corner, then doubling the lead within 60 seconds.

Phillipa Lewis extended Durham’s advantage in the 22nd minute, before Rosie Dale pulled one back, but the students were three goals ahead again shortly before half-time, when Camilla McWhirter notched.

Kendal’s Nicola Conway grabbed the only goal of the second period, but Durham were deserved winners.

Next up, on November 9, is a crunch clash with second-top Wakefield, who are also unbeaten, but with five wins and two draws in their seven outings.

* Sunderland Broom went down 5-0 to Newcastle at Sandhill View to remain without a point in the North League’s Division Two North East.

This Saturday, Broom visit Maiden Castle to take on league leaders Durham University thirds (noon).
