WHITING turned up in big numbers last week, with bags of up to 30 fish and the best weighing 1¼lb – big for this time of year.
How big they will be by October, after a summer fattening up on the sprats and sandeels!
The Glass Centre, Rat House Corner and Roker Pier were the best marks for whiting, as worm tipped with mackerel, or a big piece of mackerel, proved to be the best bait.
As long as there is plenty of colour in the water, these fish will feed 24/7, but if it clears up anglers will have to wait until after dark for these fish.
Mackerel have shown in good numbers on Roker Pier, but not on every tide. When they have been there, anglers have taken bags of up to 20 fish a session, plus one or two good pollock up to 4½lb, along with a few smaller fish. Float fishing has been the best method for these fish, with the best baits being ragworm, sandeel and mackerel strip.

For bait anglers, there have been one or two codling up to 4lb, along with plaice, dabs, coalfish, small gurnards and whiting in big numbers.

Boat anglers are still finding fish over the wrecks up to seven miles off. Despite the coloured water (which some skippers are reporting goes off up to 12 miles), there have been a lot of mackerel.

On Sunday, fishing a wreck six miles out of Sunderland, anglers took eight cod between 5-9¾lb plus ling up to 10lb. Shads and baited hokkis took the fish, but the best method taking the best fish was a ling flowing hook trace, baited with squid or mackerel.
