Sunderland B bounced back from their defeat at Darlington to secures a cracking 4½-½ win over Park View in the Inter-County Seniors League’s Group Two at Houghton.
George Brown, Joe Maxfield, Billy Conway and Billy Roberts never looked back from a 14-1 lead to defeat J.Burglass 20-4.
Richie Jobling’s quartet of Tony Grimes, Micky Lowis and Frankie Froud defeated C. Chapman 19-11, while the remaining rink of Peter Thomson (snr), Anthony Wood, Bobby Usher and Terry Todd looked set for a comfortable win, leading 17-8, but had to settle for an 18-18 draw.
The overall score was 57-33 to Sunderland, whose next fixture is at Stanley on Monday, November 9.
In Group Three, Sunderland A were due to play Gateshead, however a clerical error at the Sunderland end meant the game wasn’t played. The new date for the game is Wednesday, November 18 at 2.30pm.
The A team are next in action on November 10, at home to South Shields.
In the same group, Houghton A entertain The Parks B on November 12, with the team already selected.

Sunderland’s Inter-County League squad open up their five-match league campaign against Hartlepool tomorrow (2pm).
Last season, Sunderland recorded one of their best results against Pool, winning 10-2, and a repeat performance would get the season off to a cracking start.

The national competitions are slowly getting underway. In the singles, South Shields’ Neal Ridley had a good 21-14 win at West Denton’s Daniel Bennett, while Houghton’s Freddie Fletcher narrowly went down 21-17 at home to Stanley’s Mark Higgins.
Houghton’s Peter Thomson defeated Sunderland’s Richie Mckie 24-17 in the pairs to set up a second round tie against Gateshead’s Brian Poulter.
In the Over-60s singles, Houghton’s Bobby Borthwick was beaten 21-18 at South Shields, while Durham’s Ray Robinson narrowly went down 21-20 at Gateshead. Fellow Durham entrant Laughlin Todd progressed with a 21-16 home win over West Denton’s James Young.
In the National Over-60s double fours, Houghton A were well beaten by Durham A, however the Houghton squad were given a reprieve when it was discovered that Durham had fielded an ineligible player in the home leg. Houghton were duly awarded the match, which, in turn, has set up a tie against Durham B.
Last weekend, Stanley hosted another Test match as England faced Scotland.
The outcome of the match went right down to the final singles game, with England’s Merv King defeating Scotland’s Alec Marshall 10-1, 5-3 to seal a 6-5 match win for England.
There is more international action on show at Stanley today and tomorrow as they host a ladies Test between the same countries.
England selectors have named the Under-25 trial squad, with three local bowlers included – Josh Minto (The Parks), Noah Cummings (Darlington) and Matthew Ray (Hartlepool). The trial takes place at Northampton on November 22.
The full England trial takes on December 6, again at Northampton. South Shields’ David Bolt, Stanley’s Brett Arkley and The Parks Josh Minto have all been selected.
World champion Alec Marshall will be bringing an Aero Bowls Roadshow to the South Shields indoor club on Tuesday (noon-6pm). During the day, Marshall will also be launching David Bolt’s new bowls venture, Bolt Bowls, which will be based at the Jack Clark Park venue. Boston Bowls will be visiting Houghton again on Thursday, November 12 (10am-4.30pm).
Bowls Durham’s annual general meeting will take place at Houghton Dairy Lane on Tuesday, November 17 at 7pm.
