SUNDERLAND’S leading martial artists have their sights set on November’s European Championships after receiving England call-ups.

Twelve members of Sunderland’s Sendai Kushiro Karate club participated in three England squad sessions last month and will look to continue impressing to keep their place among the national elite for the Autumn’s European Championships, in Zurich.

John Bruce, 30, Holly Sterling, 26, Sam Light, 18, Beth Nicholson, 17, Ryan Spencer, 16, Martin Fraser, 24, Adam Gibson, 15, Alice Jewitt, 13, Bethaney Miller, 15, Tomoko Asanuma, 21, Laura Brice, 19, and Jamie Allan, 14, all took part and they will train and compete together throughout the next few months.

Sterling, Light, Nicholson and Spencer are hoping to be re-selected after impressing at last year’s European and World Championships.

There was a double bronze for Sterling at November’s European Championships after she was part of the British side that took world gold in the team kumite event at the World Championships, in September.

Spencer took silver and bronze from his maiden Europeans, while Nicholson took the European title.
