Sunderland County won the team event in the English Carpet Bowling Association’s Champion of Champions event.
The Wearsiders triumphed over two days at Stanley’s Louisa Centre to claim the title for the fifth time.
They were up against Durham, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire, Essex, Norfolk, Northumberland and Bedfordshire.
Sunderland hit the top just before the end of the first day, finishing on 25 points, one ahead of Suffolk, who had two games in hand.
It was still nip and tuck between Sunderland and Suffolk after the first few sessions on Sunday, however a disastrous session for Suffolk saw them slip away, while Cambridgeshire won all theirs to move within a point of leaders Sunderland.
The final set of games saw Sunderland score five out of eight points to finish on 44. Cambridgeshire, however, could do no better than match that and finished on 43.
Although neither Sunderland nor Cambridgeshire took any of the individual titles, they both produced extremely consistent performances, with Sunderland’s one second and three third-placed finishes helping them pick up the title.
Martin Campbell competed in the singles for Sunderland, with Lavinia McGahan and Colin Young in the doubles and Michael Laydon, Aidan Turner and Paul Graham in the triples.
The fours team featured Tom Haram, Olwen Gray, Bob Usher and Ronnie Williams.
