DURHAM University firsts lost their unbeaten record, and top spot in the Investec England Hockey League’s Conference North, in a tight battle with title rivals Wakefield.

All three goals in five dramatic minutes early in the second half at Maiden Castle.

Sally Walton gave Wakefield a 40th-minute lead, but Laura Bevan levelled from a penalty corner two minutes later. Walton, though, fired the winner in the 44th minute.

Durham slipped to third place as a result, a point adrift of Wakefield and behind Brooklands Poynton on goal difference.

This Sunday, Sophie Clough’s side have a tricky trip to fourth-top Stourport (noon).

H Sunderland Broom firsts host Stockton Roseberry firsts at Sandhill View in the North League’s Division Two North East on Saturday.
