DURHAM University’s title dream suffered a big setback with defeat in their Investec Women’s League’s Conference North clash with rivals Beeston.

The students went into the game level on points with the Derbyshire club, but Beeston clinched a 2-0 win to move three points clear with only six games to go.

Erica Sanders’ 25th-minute penalty corner made the breakthrough, with Kira Schmitz sealing the victory on 50 minutes.

Sophie Hawkins’ side host third-bottom Doncaster at Maiden Castle on Saturday (noon).

H Sunderland Broom lost 2-0 at Alnwick in the North League’s Division Two North East. Broom host Whitley Bay and Tynemouth thirds at Sandhill View on Saturday (10am).
