ST Gabriel’s A have clinched survival in Division One of the Sunderland and District Table Tennis League.
Saints enjoyed a comfortable 9-1 win over bottom placed Redby CA A. Frank Booth registered the only set for Redby with a fine win over Tom Bainbridge in a very tight game.
The win ensures that Saints remain in division and they will hope for a more consistent performance next season.
The combination of Saints’ win and Durham CA’s 8-2 defeat against West CA means that Durham are now the second team relegated to Division Two alongside Redby CA.
Durham have played particularly well in the second half of the season, with the support of Colin Hunt and Christian Neumann, but their early-season form sealed their fate.
Colin Hunt was deemed to be man-of-the-match with two excellent wins over John Williamson (11-8, 11-6, 17-15) and Geoff Salter (11-9 in the fifth). The match against Salter was a great exhibition with both players producing entertaining table tennis.
In Division Two, Mortimer moved a step closer to promotion to the top flight with a fine 9-1 win over West CA B. Mortimer require just one more win from their remaining matches to achieve promotion.
Both St John’s A and B teams have already gained promotion in Division Three, but the league championship remains up for grabs in the final few matches.
The championship in the top division is between reigning champs Thompson Insurance A and Silksworth IM A – the two teams play each other in the final league fixture, a crunch title decider.
Singles Handicap Cup semi-final draw: Graham Merden (St Gabriel’s C) 40 v Jimmy Scope (St Chad’s) 13, Sean Gleghorn (St John C) 52 v Jake Hannah or Ian McAllister
Both semi-finals and the final itself will be played at Sandhill Centre on Wednesday, April 11 (7pm).
