Smith takes heart from defeat

THE first of the season’s World Bowls Tour events is taking place as Perth’s Dewar Centre is holding the Scottish Masters.

Former Sunderland star Gary Smith’s debut ended in disappointment as former World Champion David Gourlay inflicted an opening round 3-8, 10-4, 2-1 tie-breaker defeat.

Despite the defeat, Smith can take heart that it took a last-bowl draw to a ditched jack by Gourlay to end his hopes on the final tie-breaker.

Another former Sunderland star David Bolt was given a wild card entry and did progress past the first round after defeating the ninth seed Mark Royal 4-8, 9-2, 2-0 (tie breaker).

He then went out in the next round to another former world champion Alex Marshall 11-6, 8-8.
