It has been a good week for the Sunderland Senior squads as both enjoyed victories.

The B team entertained Hartlepool A at Houghton and recorded a cracking 43-33 (4½-½) win.

Tony Grimes, Ebby Dent, Peter Brickle and Frankie Froud were always in the lead against Albert Ward, and eventually ran out 18-12 winners.

Peter Bulmer, Billy Roberts, Peter Thomson and Richie Jobling collected two counts of five on the way to a 16-12 win over Keith Wilford.

The remaining rink of George Brown, Tony Wood, Alf Ferguson and Terry Todd let slip a 9-5 lead, to finish 9-9 in a low scoring game against former England Internationalist Cliff Simpson.

The B team are in action again next Friday when they head to leaders Darlington B for a 10.30am start.

The A had to work hard against Houghton for a 44-32 (4½-½) win.

The win keeps them on course for an end of season play-off place for the current title holders.

Bobby Rollason, Billy Hearne, John Jones and Tommy Jopling defeated David Sim 16-8, while Pat Collins, Hendy Shields, Fred Knubley and Billy Ferry sneaked home 14-12 against Peter Harding.

The remaining rink of Joe Flett, Ronnie Robson, Ray Robinson and Bobby Graham let slip a four-shot lead, to finish 14-14 against Eric Weightman.

The A team return to action on Tuesday when they entertain the Park’s at Houghton.

H At the World Indoor Singles Championships, former Sunderland star Gary Smith faced fellow England Internationalist Mark Royal in the first round.

The first set saw Smith take an unassailable 8-3 lead after eight of the nine end, best of two sets format.

The second set looked in the bag for Smith as he led 5-3 with one end to go.

However, despite not managing to score more than a single in the game, Royal bagged a treble to take the second set 6-5 and force the match into a three end tie breaker.

The loss of the second set didn’t affect Smith as he took a 2-0 lead in the tie breakers to move into the second round.

In the next round, Smith will face former World Champion, Scotland’s Alex Marshall MBE, on Thursday at 7.30pm.

H In the Ladies Double fours Mason Trophy, there was disappointment for Houghton Ladies as they went down 37-30 to Redcar, in the last thirty two.

In the Liberty Trophy, Durham’s conquerors Nottinghamshire, moved into the last eight by inflicting a 128-94 defeat on to Yorkshire. They will now face Warwickshire.

In the Denny Cup, Stanley will be looking to progress into the last eight when they face Nottingham this weekend, the winners will face MidGlos or Exonia.

The Durham County Seniors squad enjoyed a 138-83 win over Yorkshire in the latest round of Midland Senior League fixtures.

Durham recorded four winning rinks in the game played at Hartlepool, and move up to the top of the table.

The counties’ next fixture is at Selby against Nottinghamshire.

Locally, Sunderland’s Ray Robinson and Tommy Jopling have been selected alongside Stanley’s Hendy Shields, Houghton’s Eric Weightman is on the bench.
