Sea Angling by Jack Melton

ROUGH conditions kept boat anglers ashore with the persistent northerly winds.

While Roker Pier is still closed due to the damage from the heavy seas, there was still plenty of sport for shore anglers with loads of flounders and coalies in the Wear and the Tyne. Some codling to four pounds were taken from Shields Pier in the early hours of the morning.

For the best action it means a trip to the west, where mackerel, dogfish, smooth hounds, gurnards, whiting and pollack are being taken at Kirkudbright in southern Scotland. The best reported catch of last week was a bag of 17lb 2oz with a smooth hound of 7lb 6oz.

Competition anglers found plenty of action at Panns Bank last Wednesday night, with 16 rods turning out for the Eastenders Sweepstake at Panns Bank.

All weighed in, with the winner of this longest fish match being Richie Carr at 38cms with Davie Mould next for one at 37cms. Tommy Tate was third with 35cms and there was a tie for fourth between Rob Davison and Richie Carr at 34cms.

The Rutherfords/Conoflex Open at the Copthorne Hotel on Saturday night saw 15 entrants with all weighing in. Phil Wright was the winner with 388cms followed by Jim Dobie for 321cms and Neil Cutler with 277cms.

Bob Surtees took eight members of Ryhope’s Blue Watch Youth Club for a competition at Panns Bank on Sunday afternoon, with all taking fish. Declan Burns had 19 fish and the longest was one of 39cms by Courtney Tuckerman.

Eastenders SAC were out at the Glass Centre on Sunday for a longest fish match, but just eight members turned out. Chris Hossack was the winner with a flounder of 39cms and Steve King was next for a coalie of 36cms. There was a tie for third between Jim Dobie and Chris for 33cms coalies.

Hoping that the weather improves, there are a number of competitions over the coming week.

On Saturday, Eastenders are out at the Business Park from noon to 4pm Penn points; Sunday, Ryhope SAC 1-5pm Tyne Business Park. Seaham SAC 1-6pm. Treasurers Cup; Wednesday, Eastenders Sweepstake 7-10pm, Panns Bank.
