ST Chad’s, second in the first division of the Sunderland and District Table Tennis League, edged home to a 7-2 win against Third Division Sacriston St Bede’s D in the second round of the Team Handicap Cup.

The competition sees players allocated an individual handicap to try to level out the matches.

St Chad’s were required to award between nine and 13 points to their opponents, leaving little margin for error.

And so it proved to be with 19 out of the 23 games played resulting in a score of 21-16 or closer.

St Chad’s player Barry Cuthbertson finished the night unbeaten and was closely supported by Jimmy Scope and Dave Bissett, who won two sets apiece.

Debbie and Nikki Irwin each picked up a set for Sacriston, with Terry Chartlon unlucky not to claim a set.

In the match between Redby CA A and Sacriston St Bede’s C, Redby were required to give between four and eight point start to their opponents in each of the individual sets played.

Reigning-champions Sacriston won the first five sets to win the tie and progress to the next round.

Durham CA A edged out Redby CA B 6-3.

Colin Hunt was awarded the man-of-the-match award for Durham after winning his sets, and he received great support from his team-mates Gavin Bestford (2) and Stuart Anderson.

Redby’s consolation sets were picked up by Allan Girdwood (2) and Joe Muldowney.

Silksworth IM B performed well against Sacriston St Bede’s B, despite only being able to field two players.

Both teams agreed to play all of the sets, with Sacriston running out 6-3 winners.

Silksworth IM A progressed to the quarter-final stages with a comfortable 7-2 win over Durham CA B, and will next take on Sacriston St Bede’s C.

Division Two rivals St Gabriel’s B and St John’s A took part in an entertaining tie with St Gabriel’s winning the match 5-1.

Thompson Insurance, leaders of Division One, ensured their name went into the hat when they defeated last year’s runners-up, Mortimer CA, 5-0.

Andrew Wilkinson, Diane Cartmell and Marc Cotton did the damage for Thompson’s, but they were forced to work hard for their victory by the South Tynesiders.

St John B against Sacriston St Bede’s A is the only outstanding tie still to be played.
