Former infantry man and Afghan vet Ray Robinson (Houghton CC) made the Nostalgic trip to Tidworth Garrison in Wiltshire to compete in the Wessex Cx league, which incorporated the British Army cyclocross championships.

It was was a full-on race from the start, with a frantic rush to negotiate a series of six very early hairpin bends.

Giving it his all, Ray held his own and continued to work hard to get on the wheel of another rider and held strong for three laps until they were caught by a larger group.

Being closed down unexpectedly caused Ray to lose focus and the group moved away, leaving him to battle on alone.

However, using his steeplechasing experience from his Gateshead Harriers days, Ray made good distance and speed.

Ray finished in a fantastic overall position of fourth in the Army Championships and took a well-deserved gold medal position in the Army Reserves category.

H The Cyclo Cross North East season drew to a close with Houghton CC riders battling it out to gain vital points to establish a final league placing.

The best eight races count for each rider so it’s vital to get eight rides in.

Durham and Whitby were the final two races of the season and many riders were hoping that no complications would scupper their hopes of a final league placing.

Houghton’s Ian Jobling, Peter Searle and Paul Robson made the journey down to the Yorkshire coast and all had very strong races to finish off their season.

This was Peter’s eighth finish of his first season and he joined Colin Humphrey, who gained his league placing a few weeks earlier at Carlisle.

The week previously at Durham, saw Houghton’s riders perform well with excellent performances from Paul Robson, Ian Jobling and Dave Stevens.

Dave rode to his best finish of the year with 14th place in a hotly competed Seniors race.

Ian Jobling came in 42nd out of 60 riders in the V40 category. Paul Robson finished 13th from 31 in the V50 field.

Special mention and congratulation goes to Ian Jobling who managed to compete all the races of the CXNE Season.
