Riders find Rat Race tough going

Have your say

HOUGHTON Cycling Club were represented at CXNE Rat Race Round 10 at Temple Park, South Shields, by Paul Robson, Paul Whitehill, David Stevens, Matt Webb and Peter Reed.

The Vet/Junior/Women’s race was 40 minutes on a challenging course with many off camber sections, which combined with the muddy conditions were causing some problems for the riders.

A group of five were away from the gun. Kenny Johnson (Team Scott UK) was at the front of this group, until the last lap and a half, which saw Johnson and James Anderson (Adept Precision) open up a small gap.

Johnson won by a narrow margin, while Paul Robson had to retire in the first lap due to a mechanical.

This left Whitehill and Peter Reed flying the colours for Houghton. Paul finished 30th and Peter 73rd.

Nicola Davies (Beacon Wheelers) was the fastest female, with a time of 46.07.9 and James Edmond (Ferryhill Wheelers) the fastest Junior with a time of 44.46.5.

The Senior event was a 60-minute race and the conditions were even worse after the other riders had churned the course up, added to the showers in between races.

This was a very exciting race as Stuart Wearmouth (MTS Cyclesport) hit the front of the race very quickly and stayed away for the rest of the race.

Colin Ash (Cestria Cycles) and Keith Murray (Team Scott UK), were battling it out behind Wearmouth.

When Ash changed his bike, Murray gained a good lead but by the last lap the gap had closed – but he still had enough to finish ahead of Ash.

Matt Webb and David Stevens of Houghton CC rode excellent races, finishing 15th and 19th respectively.
