REDBY kept the race for the division one title between three teams, defeating leaders St Chad’s 7-3.

It was an impressive performance as Redby could only turn out two players. Anthony Barella and Bernie Morris were up to the challenge and went through the night unbeaten.

West CA A maintained their fine recent form with a 7-3 win against Thompson Insurance B.

Geoff Salter proved once again to be a dependable number one for West, taking his singles comfortably.

John Williamson matched this feat and Salter and Williamson combined to edge the closest of doubles matches 11-8 in the fifth.

In Division Two, St Gabriel’s B eased their relegation worries in division two with a hard-fought 6-4 victory against Mortimer CA.

David Revell led the way for St Gabriel’s with three singles wins, with team-mates Stephen Young and Mark Burton contributing one each.

St Gabriel’s secured the win with victory in the doubles. Mortimer hit back through Dave Cutler and Matty Hampton.

St John A moved off the bottom of the table for the first time this season after they beat St Gabriel’s C 8-2.

Istvan Soos is looking at home in this division and won his three singles for St John without the loss.

He was well assisted by Craig Burton and Craig Hilton with two singles victories.

Syd Gooding was the best of the St Gabriel’s players with two wins, but it wasn’t enough to earn his side a share of the points.

In Division Three, St John C continued their surge up the division three table after their 7-3 win over Boldon Tennis Club.

Alex Smith, for St John, took his three singles, most notably against David Pringle 3-1, who was unbeaten this season going into the match.

Gary Anderson and Mike Wilson assisted Smith well with two wins and one win respectively, but both found Pringle too strong. Carlos Caldeira was the other victor for Boldon defeating Wilson 3-0.

Sacriston St Bede’s B made short work of bottom side St John B, winning 10-0.

The Sacriston team of Duncan Fraser, Dan Nicholson and Nigel Coe were untroubled in their victory.
