UNBEATEN Durham University firsts continue to lead the way in the Investec England Hockey League’s Conference North after a fifth win in six games.

Rachel Doherty rocked the students with a fourth-minute opener for Ben Rhydding, but the visitors hit back immediately through Alice Toynton.

Eleanor Trafford restored the Yorkshire club’s lead on 21 minutes, but Ellen Patterson equalised before half-time, then Philippa Lewis came up trumps with two goals in three second-half minutes, both from penalty corners, to secure a 4-2 away success.

This Saturday, Durham entertain Kendal at Maiden Castle.

H After a week off, Sunderland Broom – still looking for their first win of the season – return to action in the North League’s Division Two North East with a home game against Newcastle at Sandhill View (noon start).
