Parks too good for Sunderland in Denny Cup

SUNDERLAND bowed out of this year’s Denny Cup after The Parks inficited a 24-shot defeat on the Crowtree outfit.

All four rinks went down in the 77-53 defeat.

At Crowtree, both squads suffered four-shot defeats. Phillip Dixon, Locky Todd, Gary Farquhar and Colin Broxson let a 13-9 lead slip to finish 18-14 down while Hendy Shields, Matty Kilty, Ray Robinson and Bobby Graham were always behind.

At The Parks, Pat Collins, Michael Laydon, Terry Todd and Pete Thomson did well to finish only 19-16 down after trailing 10-1 after only five ends.

Keith Hopper, Billy Hearne, John Jones and Joe Flett were always behind and finished 22-9 down.

Sunderland now drop into the Denny Plate and will face Houghton on Saturday, November 19.

Sunderland open up this season’s inter club campaign against Shildon tomorrow. The action starts at 2pm at Crowtree and 1pm at Shildon.

H Sunderland Ladies suffered a heavy 139-84 defeat in their latest round of inter-club fixtures against Great Aycliffe.

At Crowtree, Alice Curtis, Pat Wayman, Pat Johnson and Ella Baker defeated E.Hugill 21-15. Doreen Kerrigan, Madge Robins, Hilda Snell and Maureen Firth snatched a late 14-14 draw against E.Helm.

The remaining rink of Jean Brown, Shiela Davies, Anne Raine and Amy Bevan went down 26-10 to L.Towler. This left the home squad ten shots down.

Down the A1, Anne Todd, Shiela Thomson, Mary Williamson and Margaret Mitchinson won a thriller 22-21 against M.Holmes, but the remaining two rinks were well beaten.

Kathy Hulley, Rene Mallaburn, Margaret Eggleston and Ethel Pattinson went down 31-6 to M.Ormerod, while Betty Thompson, Mary Ramshaw, Evelyn Barkes and Gwen Eltringham went down 32-11 to M.Hanrahan.

This left the away squad 45 shots down.

H The Sunderland senior A team return to Over 60s national double fours action next Friday as they take on Stanley. The action starts at 10.30am at Crowtree.

H The Durham County seniors returned to winning ways with a 18-8 win over Lancashire in the latest round of the national over 60s league. The win keeps Durham’s hopes of progressing out of the group alive but they require Lancashire to beat Yorkshire in the remaining group game.

The county squad also return to Midland Senior league action on November 17 with a trip to Melton Mowbray to face Leicestershire.

Locally, Sunderland’s Billy Hearne, Joe Flett, Ray Robinson and a now fit Tommy Jopling plus Houghton’s Jimmy Mckinney and Eric Weightman have all been selected to play.
