THERE was a major surprise in the first round of this season’s Liberty Trophy as current holders Durham went out to Nottinghamshire albeit by a single shot at York.

The two counties last met two season’s ago where Durham ran out by 15 shots but Durham’s hopes of retaining their title were dashed as too many under par performances across the green cost the county dearly.

Out of the six rinks, Durham only had two winning rinks with the pick of them being Gary Smith’s 27-12 win.

The win for Notts was the first time they have progressed past the first round for four years.

In the second round, Notts face Yorkshire, who received a walk over against Northumberland.

Durham County ladies open up their Atherley Cup campaign with a trip to New Earswick on Sunday, December 8, against Nottinghamshire, locally Houghton have six players selected – B.Johnson, M.Metcalf, M.Middleton, J.Smith, N.Stephenson, M.Hall.

H Durham County Seniors travel to New Earswick on Tuesday as they face Lincolnshire in the latest round of Midland’s League fixtures.

Locally, Sunderland’s Tommy Jopling and the Houghton duo of Erice Weightman and Jimmy McKinney have been selected to play. Sunderland’s Ray Robinson in on the bench alongside Stanley’s Hendy Shields.

H Sunderland return to Denny Plate action on Saturday as the face West Denton. The only change from the team that defeated Durham in the previous round see’s Billy Ferry return as skip.

H Houghton Ladies’ hopes of progressing to the third round of the Yetton Trophy were dashed as a strong Carlisle outfit inflicted a 116-51 defeat.

Carlisle next face Durham, who defeated South Shields 77-71.
