SUNDERLAND Senior squads had a mixed week as the latest round of Inter Club Senior fixtures were completed.

In Group Three, title-holders Sunderland A maintained their place at the top of the group after grinding out a 48-40 (3½-1½) win at South Shields.

Pat Collins, Hendy Shields, Fred Knubley and Billy Ferry cruised to a 21-9 win over J.Kelso, while Bobby Graham’s quartet of Joe Flett, Ronnie Robson and Ray Robinson recovered from 14-4 down with only three ends to play to sneak an unlikely 14-14 draw against A.Cummings.

The remaining rink of Ted Forster, Billy Hearne, John Jones and Tommy Jopling went down 17-13 to G.Driver.

The A team’s final game of 2013 is at Houghton against Hebburn on Tuesday, December 10, at 12.30.

In the same group, the Houghton A team entertain Gateshead on Thursday, November 28.

The Sunderland B team suffered a third defeat in four games and sit bottom of Group Two.

The trip to Stanley was always going to be a tough task and so it proved as Stanley ran out 59-26 (5-0) winners.

Ebby Dent, debutee David Gowland, Frankie Froud and George Gibson were unlucky to go down 14-13 to D.Craig, while George Brown, Peter Thomson, Alfie Ferguson and Terry Todd suffered a second-half slump to finish 18-10 down to W.Bell.

The remaining rink of Peter Bulmer, Tony Wood, Billy Conway and Peter Brickle never got going and went down 27-3 to D.Webb.

The B team’s next game is not until Wednesday, January 15, at Houghton against Hartlepool.

H Houghton face a huge task this weekend as they take on a Stanley squad comprising of two current England internationals, three former England internationals and four current Liberty squad players in the next round of the Denny Cup!

H In the Yetton Trophy, the Houghton ladies enjoyed a 82-64 win over Newcastle. In the next round, they will face Cumbria, who defeated Eden 107-44.

Other local results saw South Shields defeat Concordia 92-146 and Durham defeat The Parks 90-82. The two winners meet each other in the next round.

H The Durham County selectors have named the Liberty Trophy team that will face Nottingham in the first round of this year’s competition.

Yet again, Durham have to travel to a neutral green as York will provide the venue on Saturday, November 23, at noon.

The make-up of the squad demonstrates where the strength of indoor bowls in the county lies as the 24-man team is made up of 11 Hartlepool players, eight Stanley players and five Darlington players.
