SUNDERLAND Veterans’ two teams have had a busy time in the Inter-County League.

Sunderland A took another step to securing a play-off place after defeating their nearest challengers South Shields 4-1 at Houghton in Group Three.

Michael Wright, Bobby Rollason, Ray Robinson and Bobby Graham cruised to a 17-7 win over Geoff Driver, while Michael Carr, Fred Knubley, Michael Davis and Billy Ferry eased to a 16-6 victory over Alan Cummings.

The usually reliable rink of Pat Collins, Barney Walsh, John Jones and Tommy Jopling suffered a second consecutive defeat, succumbing 20-8 to John Kelso. The 39-33 win means a victory over their next opponents, Hebburn, will guarantee a play-off place.

In Group Two, Sunderland B endured a heavy 4-1 defeat at Stanley.

The only bright spot came from Peter Bulmer, Peter Brickle, Alfie Ferguson and Terry Todd, who recorded a cracking 13-6 win over E. Henry, however the remaining two rinks were well beaten.

Tony Wood, Joe Maxfield, Bobby Usher and Billy Conway went down 22-7, while Peter Thomson, Tony Grimes, Frankie Froud and Richie Jobling were swamped 33-4. Overall, Stanley won 61-24.

The B team, however, bounced back two days later in a rearranged tie against bottom-of-the-group Park View at Houghton, running out 4-1 winners.

Peter Thomson, Tony Wood, Frankie Froud and Richie Jobling eased to a 17-7 win, while George Brown, David Gowland, Peter Brickle and Alfie Ferguson recorded a narrow 11-9 success.

The remaining rink of Peter Bulmer, Bobby Usher, Billy Conway and Billy Roberts let slip a 7-2 lead before dropping a last end double to go down 11-10.

Overall, the 38-27 troiumph should see the B team avoid the group’s wooden spoon. Their final fixture is not until March 4, at home to leaders Hartlepool A.
