Late surge seals win for Sunderland

Have your say

SUNDERLAND’S Denny Cup squad progressed into the third round of this season’s competition after a 79-72 win over Durham – but they made hard work of it.

At Crowtree, Billy Ferry’s quartet of Jaxon McKenna, Terry Todd and John Jones defeated A.Musgrove 21-12 while Keith Hopper, Alf Ferguson, Michael Davis and Tommy Jopling were left to rue an early dropped six as they went down 21-19 to B.Shearer. That left the home squad seven shots in credit.

At Durham, Joe Flett, Dan Todner, Mark Higgins and Pete Thomson Jnr recorded a cracking 28-14 win over J. Layfield but it was a tough day’s work for Michael Wright, Billy Hearne, Ray Robinson and Bobby Graham as they went down 25-11 to D.Christie. That left the away squad level.

A 14-shot advantage on the 17th end was transformed into a two-shot lead in Durham’s favour, but a late surge got the Crowtree outfit home. The final winning margin overall was seven shots.

In the next round, Stanley will provide the opposition on Saturday, November 17.

The defeat for Durham means they drop into the Plate and will face Houghton this weekend, with West Denton awaiting the winners.

H There was disappointment for the Durham County Under 25s double fours squad as they crashed out of this year’s competition in the first round 38-28 to Notts.

The home leg was held at Crowtree but the rink of J.Forcer, J.Ballantyne (both Hartlepool), P.Dixon and G.Farquhar (both Stanley) could only muster a 18-17 win. The away squad of N.Cummings (Darlington), M.Ray, A.Portaway, J.Harris (all Hartlepool) were beaten 21-10.

H Durham county selectors have named the Liberty Trophy team to face Lancashire on Saturday, November 24.

Three clubs dominate the 24-man team – Hartlepool (12), Stanley (7) and Darlington (4), while Aycliffe provide one.

Durham were originally drawn against Notts but the latter conceded. The game against Lancashire will be on a neutral green at Carlisle.

H The local part of this season’s national competitions are still progressing. In the pairs, Sunderland’s Dan Todner and Pat Thomson found the international duo of Stanley’s David Bolt and Gary Smith too hot to handle as the latter ran out 28-10 winners.

Billy Ferry had a good 21-10 win at Park View over Jim Hutchinson and will next face Shields’ Ian McIntosh, who defeated Sunderland’s Pete Thomson 22-21.

In the singles, Alan Thompson went down 21-11 at West Denton to Mick McGreevy.

After a cracking 21-13 win over Stanley’s Billy Bell, there was disappointment in the next round for Sunderland’s Joe Flett in the over 60s singles. Despite home advantage, Flett went down 21-5 to The Park’s Brian Houghton.

In the same competition, Ray Robinson went down 21-9 at Concordia to J.Hume.

H Following the Sunderland Ladies’ Yetton defeat to Houghton, they now drop into the Plate and will face Durham on Thursday, November 29 at 12.30.

H The international trial takes place this weekend at Melton Mowbray. Both David Bolt and Gary Smith (both Stanley) will be looking to clinch a place in the home international series at Stanley in March.

H Sunderland & District hold their annual general meeting at Houghton Dairy Lane next Saturday at 2pm. Three days later, Bowls Durham hold their AGM on Tuesday, November 20 at Houghton Dairy Lane (7pm).
